2010-2011 Ohleyer Memorial Award Winners Announced

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Olympic Club Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the country’s oldest and most renowned athletic club, announced the winners of the 2010-2011 Brian Ohleyer Memorial Awards to SYLVAN GUO, a senior at Lowell High School and JUAN RODRIGUEZ, a senior at Junipero Serra High School.

Sylvan Guo, 17, maintains a 4.4 weighted GPA, is a member of Lowell’s honor and service society (Shield and Scroll), and is President of the Table Tennis and Wild for Wildlife Clubs in addition to holding the position of Treasurer for the Mathletes and Vice President of Make a Difference.

In addition to her impressive academics, she is a member of the US table tennis team – competing in China, Sweden, Denmark, Canada and Colombia as well as playing in three world championships. She ranked 70th in the world in 2008. Guo also works with the Boys and Girls Club and the Indian community center while volunteering at the University Mound Home for Elderly Women. Her goal is to play on the US Table Tennis Team at the 2012 Olympics.

Olympic Club Foundation Scholars “Do More Than Make the Grade”

The Olympic Club Foundation’s Ohleyer Award recipients were recently featured in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle on February 18th.

Lowell’s Hannah Safford and Castro Valley’s James Woodard received the Olympic Club Foundation’s Ohleyer Award on Monday, February 23rd at the Foundation’s Annual Awards Banquet.

The Ohleyer Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship awarded by The Olympic Club Foundation. The recipient is a student whose athletic and academic interests are matched by personal qualities of leadership, involvement and community service.

2005 Ohleyer Award Winner Tyrone McGraw Honored

The 2005 Ohleyer Award was granted to Tyrone McGraw, a senior at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. Tyrone was presented his award at the Commissioner’s Dinner in November.

The Brian Ohleyer Award is a prestigious award established in memory of the outstanding young Olympian Brian Ohleyer who lost his life in a traffic accident in 1996. This is the 5th year the Olympic Club Foundation has awarded the Ohleyer Award to an outstanding Bay Area high school student who best demonstrates the ideals exemplified by Brian’s life, an individual whose superior athletic and academic skills were matched by personal qualities of leadership and community service. Past Ohleyer Award Recipients are Jeffrey Deal, Galileo HS, Tony Dinh, Sacred Heart Cathedral HS, Natalie Joffe, Marin Catholic HS, and Sam Walsh, Serra HS.
